In-Bond Merchandise Destruction

Merchandise that hasn’t cleared customs can be destroyed in-bond, without entering US commerce. We handle the in-bond move, CBP supervision and paperwork, which can save duty and storage costs.

When this applies

Goods moving under a CBP bond, or held in a bonded warehouse or FTZ, can be destroyed before they enter US commerce. This makes sense when the goods are damaged, unsaleable, past date, or no longer wanted by the buyer, and paying duty to enter them would be wasted money. If the goods have already been entered and duty paid, destruction may still qualify for a duty drawback claim, which follows a different process.

FAQ

Do I pay duty on goods destroyed in-bond?

Merchandise destroyed under CBP supervision before entering commerce generally doesn’t pay duty. Confirm your case with your customs broker.

Yes, sometimes with a duty drawback claim. Drawback destruction is filed with CBP Form 7553 (Notice of Intent to Export, Destroy or Return), which must be submitted before destruction. Ask us about your case and we’ll coordinate with your broker.

Form 3499 is used to request CBP approval to manipulate or destroy goods still under CBP control. Form 7553 gives CBP notice of intent to destroy entered goods for a drawback claim.

Most quotes go out the same day, and pickup follows CBP approval.
